"Only Natural: The Horn of Mozart and Beethoven"

Kristin Thelander

The natural (valveless) horn of the late 18th and early 19th centuries was a very popular solo instrument; contemporary accounts of performances indicate that only the violin and piano were more popular instruments. A great deal of music was written for the instrument during this period, and many hornists had significant careers as soloists. In this presentation, Dr. Thelander will demonstrate the technique of the natural horn and perform many examples from solo and chamber music repertoire. Examples will be drawn from the works of well-known composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Weber, in addition to "lesser" composers such as Punto, Dauprat and Gallay.
