Welcome to the virtual home of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences!

The oldest and largest college of The University of Iowa, we are at the heart of its teaching and research mission. Each year we greet more than 4,000 undergraduates as they begin their University education with our foundation courses. Many of them will go on to choose one of our nearly sixty majors. Our forty diverse departments and interdisciplinary programs see about 70 percent of UI undergrads to their degrees, and nearly 50 percent of the University’s graduate students, too. In fact, almost everyone who passes through campus—from students, faculty, and staff, to visiting alumni and friends—intersects with the vibrant life of our College.

CLAS is one of the truly comprehensive colleges of arts and sciences, the warm and thriving center to countless creative and intellectual pursuits. Under our roof, students are rehearsing for recitals and plays, quietly working equations, and conversing in one of our many offered languages; researchers are star-gazing, mapping genes, and investigating hearing and speech; writers are writing, painters are painting, and scholars are consulting archives, field notes, and databases, drafting journal articles and books. Our faculty members are dedicated to teaching, working across disciplinary lines, and reaching out to the community, in service to the state of Iowa and beyond. They invite students to explore and prepare them for 21st-century careers, not only from the classroom, but through internships, research projects, and study abroad. We love to hear of the successes of former students—our door is always open to alumni.
