As the new semester begins, the College encourages you to remind all instructors that the “For Faculty” pages of the CLAS website provide a wealth of information on the College’s Classroom Procedures and Policies, including:
- Information that should be included on the syllabus, including the following: Instructors must provide students with information about the course, such as the name of the course, course number, department, college that functions as the administrative home, DEO and instructor’s names, and departmental office address and contact information, goals and expectations for the course, and other polices [see below].
- Time Committed to Instruction. University and College policy on office hours/week; arrangements for instruction if an instructor cannot meet a class, and so on.
- Student Attendance. This discussion includes information about University and College policies and suggestions for attendance policies.
- Students with Disabilities . Instructors must make reasonable accommodations for students with physical, mental, or learning disabilities; this section explains University procedures, including the responsibility of students with disabilities to register with the Office of Student Disability Services and to bring a Student Academic Accommodation Request— SAAR form with them when discussing specific requests for accommodation.
- Academic Fraud, Dishonesty, and Cheating. Links to information on w hat constitutes academic fraud and cheating, the University’s “Turn-it-in” program for help in identifying plagiarism, and the procedures to follow when an instructor suspects a student of cheating.
- Examination Policies and Procedures. The discussion includes basic procedures for proctoring exams, make-up exams, and scheduling exams outside of class time.
- Final Examination Policies and Procedures. This section discusses the College’s policies for final examinations and for requesting changes to the final exam time. All final exams must be given during the one-week period set aside for evaluating student performance; all courses including Saturday & Evening classes have assigned final exam times.
- Grading. Discussion here includes the College’s g rading system and grading policies, information on the “second-grade-only” option, grade distributions, reporting grades, and changing grades.
- Student Records and Confidentiality. Current policies on h ow long to keep student records and confidentiality of grades and other student records.
- Student Evaluation of Teaching. All courses must include student evaluations. This section provides information on College policies on procedures for students’ evaluating faculty teaching and the length of time faculty need to keep student evaluations on file.
