RE: Nominations for the honor of “Collegiate Fellow”

This is the 7th year of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Collegiate Fellow program. The program was designed to honor faculty with records of sustained productivity and distinction. The College is interested in identifying for this honor faculty whose contributions in teaching, scholarly and creative work, and leadership in service to the University, College, and department are exceptional.

I ask that you nominate by October 18, 2006, any member of your department who merits the designation of Collegiate Fellow. (Faculty members should not be informed that their names have been forwarded to me to be considered for the honor.) Faculty members are normally eligible to be nominated after eight or more years of service at the rank of professor, though a truly exceptional candidate may be nominated earlier. If you previously nominated someone, please do not resubmit his/her name for five years.

Please include in your letter of nomination a statement about the significance of the nominee’s work. Enclose an updated version of the nominee’s CV. In addition, please submit names, e-mails, and addresses of up to four distinguished scholars or artists in the nominee’s field who could be invited to serve as external evaluators (do not contact them, please). The College will seek unmistakable evidence since the candidate’s promotion to full professor of accomplished teaching and student mentorship, distinguished scholarly or creative work, and leadership in service. I will consult the College’s ad hoc committee on named chairs and professorships before making a recommendation to the Provost that the designation of Collegiate Fellow be awarded.

The designation as Collegiate Fellow is for a five-year renewable term. At the time the initial designation is made, the College will award each Collegiate Fellow a permanent $1,500 increase in salary. An endowment to the College through the UI Foundation will support a $1,500 teaching/research fund for each successful candidate during his/her first two years as Collegiate Fellow.
