For the CLAS Policy on Adjunct Faculty Positions, read the policy that describes the role of adjunct faculty in the College’s teaching programs and the terms of appointment, review, and promotion of adjunct faculty.
If the department is interested in extending an adjunct faculty member, the department conducts a review in the final year of the current appointment. To extend the appointment, the department must submit a Change in Status - Faculty Status Change form, generated on the HR Transaction System.
When an adjunct on a complimentary 0% appointment undertakes some salaried duties (e.g., classroom teaching for a semester), the department submits an Adjunct Support form, generated on the HR Transaction System.
Paid adjunct faculty appointments may be more than half-time for one semester. If the level of appointment reaches half-time over the academic year, the appointee must be terminated from the adjunct line and appointed as a visitor with benefits. A Transfer workflow form cannot be used to move individuals between adjunct and visitor status.
Adjunct faculty appointments to teach departmental courses funded by the Center for Credit Programs must be approved by the DEO and Dean Curto. For a discussion of the DEO’s and department’s responsibilities for courses sponsored by CCP, click here.
The department initiates a complimentary 0% adjunct appointment for an individual who is expected to teach in departmental courses sponsored by the CCP.
The department also initiates the adjunct support form for a salaried single-semester or academic-year appointment. The department can get appropriate MFK's from a CLAS accountant; CCP is on the routing Spath for final review and approval.
Adjunct faculty are not automatically members of the graduate faculty. To appoint an individual to graduate faculty status for a specific period or purpose (such as service on a thesis committee), the DEO applies to John Keller, Dean of the Graduate College.
