Local students attending jazz camp at the University of Iowa, June 21-26
More than 50 talented junior-high and high-school students from Iowa, Illinois and New York are attending the jazz division of the Iowa Summer Music Camp, June 21-26 at the University of Iowa School of Music.

The jazz camp provides students opportunities to interact and perform with professional jazz musicians throughout a week of music-making in small group/combo settings. Areas of study will include jazz improvisation, jazz theory, basic arranging skills, Soundpainting (a style of directed improvisation) and the art of jazz listening.
The 2006 faculty include members of the UI faculty Brent Sandy (trumpet), Steve Grismore (guitar), Jim Dreier (drums), and John Rapson (piano). Other faculty are UI alumnus Greg Mazunik (bass), Rich Medd from Iowa City West High School (trombone) and Damani Phillips (saxophone and woodwinds).
The camp will close with a concert on the popular Friday Night Concert Series, starting at 6:30 p.m. on the Fountain Stage in the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall. In case of rain, the concert will be moved to the Auditorium of Macbride Hall on the UI Pentacrest.

The Iowa Summer Music Camp is sponsored by the UI School of Music and directed by Kevin Kastens, who also directs the UI Hawkeye Marching Band. It offers a variety of musical experiences for talented young musicians who have completed grades 8-12. All participants were recommended by their school music teachers.
The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
