Speaker: Lena Hill
Affiliation: Department of English and African American Studies Program
Date: September 11, 2009
Time: 4:00 p.m., 704 Jefferson Building

Description: Part of the American Studies Floating Friday lecture series, this talk contemplates Harlem Renaissance writers from Angelina Weld Grimké to Jessie Fauset and considers how their written work combats narrow, and often derogatory, images of black womanhood. Their appeal to ekphrasis, a verbal representation of a visual representation, inserts their literary projects into debates surrounding the visual objectification of African American women.
