Kate Gfeller, F. Wendell Miller Distinguished Professor, holds a joint appointment in the School of Music and in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology. She has been on the College’s faculty since 1985. She is principal investigator of the NIH-funded music perception project for the Iowa Cochlear Implant Clinical Research Center (Department of Otolaryngology, UI Hospitals and Clinics). Internationally known for her research regarding music perception of cochlear implant recipients, Professor Gfeller has developed innovative approaches to aural rehabilitation for persons who use assistive hearing devices. In 1991, she received the Burlington Northern Faculty Achievement Award for excellence in integrating research and teaching, was selected to be a CIC Academic Leadership Fellow in 1993, and was the recipient of the National Association for Music Therapy Research Award in 1996. Professor Gfeller has been a Humanities Visiting Research Professor at the University of Queensland, Australia, delivered the 2003 UI Presidential Lecture, and has presented her research throughout the U.S. and in Canada, Ireland, England, Australia, and Brazil. She has served as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (1993-96) and on numerous University committees, including the President’s Council for Strategic Implementation, the Faculty Senate Governmental Relations Committee, the Graduate Council, and the Executive Committee of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. |
