General Education courses are reviewed every five years by the General Education Curriculum Committee.

Please send one copy of the following materials by email or campus mail to 120 Schaeffer Hall, Kathryn Hall, 335-3155.

The following checklist should be submitted with the materials. Please check items sent.

1. Provide one cover letter addressed to the Chair of the General Education Curriculum Committee, discussing the following information:

______Give the name of the department and the names of the people preparing the report along with contact information in case questions should arise or more information is needed. Please indicate that the DEO has approved the report by either including the DEO's signature on the cover letter or by some other method.

______Explain the department's general philosophy or vision of how the GE courses fit into the departmental offerings and into the department's mission statement.

______Give a list of numbers, titles, and brief descriptions of all GE courses offered by the department with typical class sizes and semesters offered. Many departments choose to included this material on an attached chart.

______If teaching assistants staff sections or teach a course, please let the committee know how many TAs generally are involved with the course and in what capacity. The committee appreciates specific numbers, especially the TA to student ratio. Again, this may be included in the above chart, if desired.

______Describe the departmental review or oversight process or any assessment methods used for GE courses. If teaching assistants teach the courses/sections, please explain how course consistency is maintained and how TAs are trained and supervised. This is essential information for the review process.

______Discuss the success of the current GE offerings by the department or any changes in the offerings or approaches planned, if applicable.

2. Please write a brief, one page report for each GE course offered, covering the following points:

______Please briefly summarize the content, audience, and goals of each GE course offered.

______Explain how each course meets the comprehensive criteria of the General Education Program. For more information, please visit www.clas.uiowa.edu/faculty/gep/comp_criteria.shtml

______Explain how each course meets the content and outcomes criteria of each GE area in which approval has been given: www.clas.uiowa.edu/faculty/gep/areas.shtml

Provide the following materials for each GE course under review. Please Note: The committee is unable to accept ICON or web links in place of actual materials. Please send a copy of each item in a format that may be easily read and copied. These materials should be attached to the appropriate overview of each course, above.

_______Syllabus. Include one syllabus from each “format” in which the course is taught (the regular semester; summer session; Saturday & Evening; winter session; GIS.) If portions of the syllabus are only online, please print and include these supplemental materials as well since they are part of the syllabus.
_______Sample assignments. Include two representative and/or important assignments for each course.
_______Sample quiz. If quizzes are used, include one quiz. If no quiz is used, please provide an equivalent assignment for each course.
_______Sample mid-term or other test. If there is a midterm or other mid-point exam, please include one test for each course.
_______Sample final exam. Please provide one sample of a final exam or, if a final exam is not given, a short explanation of the “final assessment” used for each course. If courses are offered in different modes of delivery (guided correspondence, S & E, summer/winter session) or with different instructors, explain how course consistency is maintained.

Since materials are xeroxed by CLAS for the committee, please do not staple the materials together. Binder clips are preferred. Thank you for your help.
