General Education Program

Five-Year Review Procedures

All departments or other academic programs offering General Education courses are reviewed on a five-year cycle by the CLAS General Education Curriculum Committee. Academic areas are notified of this review during the fall and again during the spring semester. All review materials are due the following September.

Review Process
During the review, the General Education Curriculum Committee examines the GE ISIS descriptions, the titles and numbers of the GE courses, and the manner in which each course conveys its relation to the criteria and goals of the General Education Program as presented by the syllabus, the assignments, and other related materials.

At the end of the review, the General Education Curriculum Committee makes general and specific recommendations to the Educational Policy Committee (EPC) concerning the General Education courses under review. EPC then recommends continuation or discontinuation of GE status.

The Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Services sends a letter in the spring semester to the department conveying these recommendations. Departments with questions should schedule a meeting to discuss the results of the review.

Required Materials
For the review, departments provide a cover letter outlining the department’s participation in the General Education Program, supplying information on such areas as enrollment and scheduling.

Instructors furnish a report on each GE course which includes the most recent syllabus and the corresponding ISIS course description as well as selected assignments.

The most recent syllabus and an ISIS description from each format of the course being offered (such Saturday and Evening GIS) is also required since the committee expects to see consistency among all offerings of the same GE course.

The General Education Curriculum Committee (GECC) has developed a checklist for this five-year review which gives a detailed list of all required materials. The checklist must be submitted with the report to indicate that each item has been sent.
