Agenda of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Faculty Assembly

The Faculty Assembly will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 in 40 Schaeffer Hall.

Please sign one of the attendance sheets available at the door.

1. Discussion/amendment/approval of the minutes of the November 19, 2003 meeting of the Faculty Assembly.

2. Nominating committee. Chair Peverill Squire will announce the members of this year's nominating committee, which will nominate members for election as next year's Assembly officers (vice chair and secretary).

3. Referendum postponed. An amendment of the College's Manual of Procedure approved last April by the Assembly, which would alter procedures for the review of the dean, conflicts with proposed University-wide procedures that are now under discussion in the Faculty Senate (see the Senate's ad hoc committee report). The College will postpone the referendum on the amendment until the University-wide procedures are determined. If the amendment conflicts with any new procedures that are adopted, the Assembly will need to revisit the issue at that time.

4. Faculty memorials. In the past, memorials of deceased faculty members were read at the Faculty Assembly's May meeting. Though this practice has not been observed in the past few years, the College does have a web site as a permanent record for faculty memorials. Web-ready photographs can also be included. Please send any memorials to Cheryl Walsh.

5. Proposed bachelor of science degree in Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology currently offers the BA degree and now wishes to offer the additional option of the BS degree. The Educational Policy Committee has approved the attached proposal and submits it to the Assembly with a motion to approve (already made and seconded).

6. Proposal to set a deadline for declaring a major. The Educational Policy Committee is concerned that the College’s current lack of a deadline for major declaration may not be beneficial to students’ progress toward a degree. Both the associate provost for undergraduate education and the Academic Advising Center share this concern. The EPC submits to the Assembly the attached policy, which establishes a deadline for declaring a major in the College, with a motion to approve (already made and seconded).

The Faculty Assembly will meet once more this semester on April 21, 2004 at 3:30 p.m in 40 Schaeffer Hall.

Questions about Faculty Assembly can be directed to Cheryl Walsh (353-2639).
