Agenda of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Faculty Assembly

The Faculty Assembly will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17, 2004 in 107 EPB.

Please sign one of the attendance sheets available at the door.

1. Discussion/amendment/approval of the minutes of the October 20, 2004 meeting of the Faculty Assembly.

2. Announcements from Chair Sarah Larsen.

3. Name changes for the Department of Exercise Science and its degree programs. In response to its 2004 departmental review, the Department of Exercise Science wishes to request a name change for the department to the Department of Integrative Physiology. It also requests changes in the names of the degree programs it offers. The department's proposal [pdf] is attached. The proposal comes to the floor from the Executive Committee as a motion already made and seconded. The proposal for the change in the name of the undergraduate program comes with the approval of the Educational Policy Committee.

4. Name change for the minor in Journalism and Mass Communication. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has requested approval to change the name of the minor in "Journalism and Mass Communication" to "Mass Communication." The school's proposal [pdf] is attached. The proposal comes to the floor from the Educational Policy Committee as a motion already made and seconded.

5. Consolidating majors in the Department of Classics and establishing a post-baccalaureate certificate in classics. The Department of Classics has submitted two proposals [pdf] for the Assembly's consideration. The first would consolidate three undergraduate language degree majors, Latin, Greek, and Classics (Latin and Greek) into one: Classical Languages. The second would establish a post-baccalaureate certificate, which would bring students (primarily from small liberal arts and state colleges in the Midwest) to Iowa to study, for the purpose of taking undergraduate and lower-level graduate classes in Latin and Greek that are not available to them in their current institution. Both proposals come to the floor from the Educational Policy Committee as motions already made and seconded.

6. Draft revision of the CLAS Procedures for Promotion and Tenure Decision-making. See attached memo [pdf] from Executive Associate Dean Raúl Curto, who will discuss the draft revision [pdf] of the CLAS/University Procedures for Promotion and Tenure Decision-making and a checklist [pdf] for reporting on the progress toward publication of books in the dossier . These draft documents were developed in consultation with the CLAS Executive Committee. The draft revision of the Procedures for Promotion and Tenure Decision-making incorporates two types of change: (1) those required due to changes at the University level, and (2) those the College is proposing to its own procedures. Unless otherwise noted in the boxed text in the document, all additions and deletions are changes required by the new University procedures.

Spring meetings of the Faculty Assembly are currently scheduled for February 16, March 23, and April 20.
