FACULTY ASSEMBLY
Agenda
April 18, 2007
Senate Chamber, Old Capitol
3:30-5:00 p.m.
- Minutes from March 28.
- Welcome to new members: Richard Hurtig, Chair of the Assembly.
- The Smoking Policy Review Committee has charged the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences faculty ‘to conduct an academic review on the acceptability of tobacco-free substitutes' [in on-stage performances]. EPC unanimously recommended that Theatre Arts productions be granted an exception to the smoking policy since acceptable tobacco-free substitutes currently are not available. The Smoking Policy Review Committee report concerning theatrical productions and the EPC minutes are available at this link. Guest: Professor Alan MacVey, Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts.
- Dean Maxson has asked the Faculty Assembly to discuss changing the name of the Department of Asian Languages & Literature to the “Department of Asian and Slavic Languages and Literatures.” The proposed change reflects the administrative consolidation of the Russian Program into Asian Languages & Literature, effective August 2007. The Russian Program currently offers language courses in Croatian, Czech, Polish, Russian, and Uzbek, and courses in the literature and culture of the regions where these languages are spoken. The Asian Languages and Literature Department currently offers programs in Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Japanese, and Sanskrit languages, and courses in the literature and culture of south Asia and east Asia. On April 4, the tenured faculty in Asian and in Russian voted 9 to 0 (with one abstention) to request the departmental name change. At their April 17 meeting, the College's Executive Committee approved the proposed change. If Faculty Assembly approves this proposal, it will go to the Provost and then to the Board of Regents for final approval.
- Conversation with Michael J. Hogan, Executive Vice President and Provost.
- Update from the Presidential Search Committee. Guest: Linda Maxson, Dean of the College and member of the Presidential Search Committee.
