Justice and diversity are among the "core values" identified by University of Iowa President Mary Sue Coleman. To further the pursuit of both justice and diversity, the Faculty Assembly of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences created an ad hoc Diversity Committee in 2000.
This committee's projects could include the following:
- Monitor collegiate efforts to increase the participation of students, faculty and staff from racial and ethnic groups that have suffered systematic discrimination in the United States, as well as progress toward achieving that participation.
- Monitor collegiate efforts to provide a rich learning environment by assuring the existence of a diverse student body, a diverse faculty, and a diverse staff, as well as progress towards achieving that provision.
- Gauge how well the College is doing with regard to its diversity efforts and progress compared with comparable research universities located in college towns.
- Make recommendations on ways to improve efforts and progress on diversity to the College.
The initial committee consisted of six members (including three members of a past ad hoc collegiate diversity committee). The Assembly constituted a Diversity Committee and released reports in 2003 - 2004; 2004 - 2005; and 2006 -2007. These reports are available on the CLAS Reports page.
