Members of the Faculty Assembly ordinarily serve for three years, with approximately one-third of the Assembly welcomed as new members each fall.
There are two main types of Faculty Assembly members, those elected during the spring CLAS elections, and those appointed or elected directly by their unit.
Elected Group Representatives
Eighteen members are elected during the spring CLAS elections to represent one of three electoral groups.
Note: Alternates may not attend or vote in place of these elected group representatives.
Appointed or Elected Unit Representatives
Other members of the Faculty Assembly are appointed or elected directly by CLAS departments or programs (with CLAS voting rights) and represent that home unit during the three-year term. Unlike group representatives described above, these members are allowed an alternate, who may be appointed or elected by the department or program and who may attend and vote when the representative is unavailable. Each department or programs handles the appointment or election of these unit representatives and their alternates internally according to that unit's established procedures. Please keep in mind that it is the responsibility of all Faculty Assembly members to solicit input from their constituents.
Additional Representatives
Officers elected as officers in the last year of their term also serve as members ex officio.
Some units that are housed in other Colleges but offer degrees through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are given voting rights in the CLAS Faculty Assembly and elect a unit representative.
The University Emeritus Faculty Council is also represented on the Faculty Assembly by two members.
