To:     All New 2008-09 Faculty

From: Raúl Curto, Executive Associate Dean

A new position is always a challenge and always full of hard work, whether you come to it directly from graduate study or whether your curriculum vitae is pages long. It's important to quickly assume the roles of teacher, departmental colleague, and researcher or artist.

CLAS supports your efforts right from the beginning through the two required days of academic orientation, devoted entirely to topics such as resources, tips on teaching, grant acquisition, and general information, and with the participation of special faculty and administrators whose advice and expertise will help make the first year a little easier. Your attendance at all sessions is critical to your early success.

Your letter of offer outlined three days of orientation:

Tuesday, August 19th

  • Most of you will receive a notice from the University Benefits Office assigning you to August 19th; a few of you will be assigned to another date.

You can sign up for benefits at the Benefits orientation, or you can submit your choices at a later date. Any coverage you choose will be effective September 1st.

Wednesday, August 20th

Thursday, August 21st

  • The Liberal Arts & Sciences' Teaching Seminars on Thursday, August 21st, with one schedule for all new faculty.
