Classroom Procedures: Required Syllabus

The University and College require every organized course to have a syllabus. Syllabi may be handed out in class, included in a course packet, or posted at the course web site. A copy of the syllabus must be kept on file in the departmental or unit office.

A syllabus functions as a contract between faculty and students, helping students to understand the goals and obligations of the course while allowing CLAS to adjudicate any complaints fairly and swiftly.

A syllabus template, with suggested headings and required information, is available at this link. New instructors might find this template useful. Required and recommended policy information also may be copied and pasted from the CLAS policy template.

The Educational Policy Committee reminds instructors that discussion of this essential course information should occur on the first day of class.
