The Catalyst Awards are designed to honor individuals, departments or programs, and students or student organizations engaged in diversity initiatives during the previous academic year which have served to promote the development of an inclusive, diverse campus community. The Catalyst Award is made by the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity.

Kate Kemp has played a leadership role in the development, organization and delivery of the annual “Strengthening and Valuing Latino Communities in Iowa” conference, co-sponsored by the School of Social Work with statewide community organizations. Now in its 9th year, this conference has grown in both size and importance as a result of Ms. Kemp’s dedication to it. In addition to her exemplary service on behalf of the annual Latino conference, Ms. Kemp plays an important leadership role in continuing efforts made by the School of Social Work to promote cultural competence and respect for diversity throughout the curriculum of the School and in many other diversity events of the School. These efforts are exemplified by her service on the Curriculum Committee of the School—charged with infusing content on diversity throughout its curriculum; service on the School’s Diversity Committee; service on the Critical Cultural Competence Certificate planning committee; and service on the Immersion Committee of the School, charged with developing national and international cultural exchanges for students of the School and University.
