Update from the College

From: Dean Linda Maxson
RE: Status of Flood Recovery, August 15, 2008

Each Friday (and at other times if important information comes available), the College will post an update to this site on recovery on campus generally and in CLAS in particular.

Class Relocations

Because of the flood, many classes have been relocated, and it is crucial that both faculty and students check ISIS for updates.

Most art studio courses have been moved to the old Menards building on Hwy 1, now referred to as the Studio Arts [SA] building. Theatre will be using Brewery Square for offices and some classes, and many music classes and practice rooms will be located in two buildings at the corner of Clinton and Court streets.

Even some classes located well out of the flood area have been moved to more appropriately-sized spaces to make room for other displaced courses. Last minute changes might occur.

All faculty and students are encouraged to check class locations on ISIS for updates. All courses on ISIS have a link from the highlighted classroom name to a campus or Iowa City map, a tool that will be very useful in locating classes that have been moved. Before the fall semester begins, be sure to locate your classroom.

For example, to see the location of this ceramics class, simply click on the bold highlighted classroom information:

The news this week is terrific as far as preparation for classes goes.  EPB, Becker, and Adler will all be ready to receive students starting on August 25th.  This will allow English, Rhetoric, Philosophy, Linguistics, CCL, JMC and Communication Studies to all return “home” later next week (August 21, 22) and be ready for the opening of classes on Monday, August 25th.  Work is progressing at Menards and at the buildings at Court and Clinton Streets, as well as Brewery Square, and we remain optimistic that we will be occupying all these areas by the end of the first week of class, if not sooner.

The river at Iowa City is at 12.8 feet elevation this morning – a full 19 feet below flood peak.  Steam is flowing through some tunnels on the east side of campus, and we continue to be optimistic that we will have steam back on the east by August 22.

While classes will return to EPB, Adler, and Becker, some minor architectural work will still be ongoing in these buildings (paint, ceilings) through the end of the month.  All the contractors and the staff in Facilities Management who worked so hard to get these buildings ready for the start of classes are to be applauded and deeply thanked.
