CLAS Policy on Old Gold Summer Fellowships for Non-tenured Faculty

The Old Gold Summer Fellowship Program is a developmental program for probationary tenure-track assistant and associate professors with nine-month appointments. The award must be taken during the first 4 years of tenure-track appointment at The University of Iowa. Details of eligibility are usually described in the faculty offer letter.

The College requires that the faculty member submit to the DEO a two-page proposal for teaching and/or research development during the fellowship period. The DEO must review and evaluate the proposal and write a letter of endorsement. Two copies of the proposal, an abbreviated CV and the DEO’s letter of endorsement are then forwarded to the Dean for approval. Application forms, deadlines and additional directions for applying are available on a link from the “Faculty Development ” page of the Provost’s web site. Applications for an Old Gold Summer Fellowship are ordinarily due to the DEO in late November or early December of each year, for transmission to the Dean’s Office in late December or Early January.

This award provides recipients with funding for summer work on an approved project, which may center on research activities, creative work, or instructional development. Each summer fellowship is expected to result in at least one project for publication, exhibit, performance, or instructional use. Awards are a fixed $6000. When applying for the Fellowship, faculty members shall express a preference to receive the award either as

  1. a salary stipend (from which taxes and fringe benefits will be deducted),
  2. a research grant without salary support (tax-exempt) that shall be used to support travel, equipment or other research or instructional development needs, or
  3. a specific combination of (a) and (b).

If no preference is specified, awards shall be made as salary.

Within two months of the conclusion of the award period, the Old Gold Awardee must submit a brief report (1-2 pages) to the DEO, with a copy to the CLAS Dean's Office, describing the activities and outcomes of the project.
