A Note on High School Course Requirements
Advising
During the first two semesters at The University of Iowa, most undergraduates are advised by professional advisors at the Academic Advising Center (AAC). All students advised at the AAC meet with an advisor twice before registering for classes, once for planning and once to receive permission to register. Advisors also work with students on many other related issues and refer students to other offices for additional resources. For more information, call the Academic Advising Center, C210 Pomerantz Center, Iowa City, Iowa, 52242; (319) 353-5700 or visit www.uiowa.edu/web/advisingcenter.
After earning 24 semester hours, most students are advised in the department offering the student's major. Students applying to selective admissions majors or programs are advised at AAC until the student is accepted into the program or has declared another major. Advising by faculty is always available by the junior year or earlier. Each department also identifies a specific honors advisor.
Regardless of where students are advised, they may request a different advisor for any reason.
The Degree Evaluation
Every student receives a degree evaluation at the time of orientation which outlines the requirements for graduation. The degree evaluation tracks a student's completion of the requirements of the General Education Program, of a declared major (s) and minor(s), of the University and CLAS residence requirements, and the hours earned and needed for graduation.
The Registrar continuously updates the degree evaluation, and students should check for these updates, especially before enrolling in courses. A student's degree evaluation may be found at ISIS after logging in and going to Student Records.
Advisors may also access the student's degree evaluation to help plan a student's schedule and to check progress toward the degree.
A Note on High School Course Requirements
In order to be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, students must satisfy all high school course requirements. When a student is granted exceptional admission with unmet high school course requirements, the degree evaluation will show the unfulfilled requirements.
Students must successfully satisfy the high school requirements by the third semester of UI enrollment. These courses must be taken for a grade and may not be taken pass/non pass. In general, one semester of college work (3 semester hours or 4 quarter hours) is required to satisfy a high school requirement.
With the exception of work in rhetoric and foreign language, courses used to satisfy the high school requirements do not fulfill UI General Education requirements.
Credit hours earned from high school course requirements count toward the minimum 120 semester hours needed for graduation, with the exception of hours earned from the UI mathematics courses 22M:001; 22M:002; and 22M:003 (or their equivalents) which never count toward graduation.
High school requirements may be satisfied through appropriate course work at any accredited university, college, or community college. Please talk with the UI Office of Admissions before enrolling in any course at another institution to verify first that the successful completion of the course will satisfy the intended high school requirement.
A high school requirement in mathematics or foreign language may be fulfilled through acceptable scores on examinations administered by The University of Iowa. Standardized test scores may be used for high school requirements in English, natural sciences, social studies, or mathematics. For AP, CLEP, and IB exam equivalencies, see the Credit by Examination table.
In order to graduate from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the high school course requirements must be satisfied. For specific answers to questions concerning these requirements, please contact Admissions.
