Students, faculty members, and academic units can request funding for projects that will advance the extracurricular research, scholarship, and creative work of undergraduate students working with faculty and promote the development of mentor-protégé relationships between undergraduate students and faculty members.
Grants from the Dewey Stuit Fund may support:
- Undergraduate student travel to disciplinary conferences, workshops, archives, or other sites, either to present their work or to advance their research or creative projects
- Equipment or supplies needed for an undergraduate research or creative project
- Departmental prizes for undergraduate research or creative efforts
- Mentoring activities such as faculty lunches or dinners with undergraduate students
The College will support at least six projects each year, ideally at least two each in the Humanities & Fine Arts, the Social Sciences, and the Natural & Mathematical Sciences. Grants to students average $300.00. Proposals may be made at any time; proposals will be evaluated as they are received; but proposals must be made in advance of the need, and decisions can not be made immediately.
There is no formal application form. Student proposals should be no longer than three pages and include:
- A description of the project including how the requested funds will advance the student's research or creative goals
- A budget for the project. This should be a budget for the entire project, indicating how the Dewey funds will be used and what other funds will be used.
- A letter of support from a faculty mentor. Only projects that will involve a faculty member (as mentor, advisor, or in another capacity) will be approved.
Faculty/academic unit proposals should be no longer than three pages and include:
- A description of the program/project and its purpose or goals
- A budget for the program/project
- A letter of support from the unit's DEO
