First-year seminar offerings for Fall 2009 are listed at the following site.

First-year seminars provide a special opportunity for first-year students. These small courses (15-17 students) introduce students to the intellectual life of the University. To encourage students' active learning, instructors encourage classroom participation, projects, and other interactive assignments and agree not to use quizzes or exams as part of the evaluation of student work.
Most FYS meet once a week for 50 minutes until the last week of classes. Some courses are "off-cycle" and meet for 110 minutes per week (either in one meeting or twice a week) but are completed by the 12th week in the semester. (Occasionally, other off-cycle configurations may be used. )
Seminars are offered for 1 semester hour of credit.
The 1 s.h. counts toward graduation as an elective.
FYS credit may not be used to satisfy major, minor, or certificate requirements.
FYS credit is never applied to the General Education Program requirements.
First-Year Seminars are graded with letter grades.
College rules for adding, dropping, and withdrawal apply, with the exception that the Second-Grade-Only option may not be used. See the Academic Handbook, Registration.
Students may enroll in First-Year Seminars during their first or second semester at the University of Iowa.
Transfer students with more than 24 semester hours of credit when they enter UI are not eligible for enrollment in a FYS.
